It depends on the age group you are teaching. I was teaching high school english for 10th and 12th grade durign my internship. I had the students do a research paper about the year they were born. They could do whatever topic they wanted--fashion, music, politics, whatever...and they loved it!

I would take them to the computer lab once a week so they could get pictures from the internet and save them as well as gathering information. They would give me all the pictures they wanted to have me upload them, then they did powerpoint presentations with a minimum of 10minutes to talk about their topic from the year they were born.

Most worked really hard on their projects since they could pick what was interesting to them and they liked that. Some would even bring me pictures to scan into the computer if they couldn't find some on the internet they liked.

Of course, if you are teaching elementary--this is not a good research option. I've recommended it to middle school teahers though.
