I also have a 92 jeep cherokee and a guy at a dealer said sometimes the starter thing goes out of it while in park so try shifting to neutral and then starting it.
I don't know what u mean by 'turns over' but hopefully this helps?

it can be a number of things. Check for spark. Check fuel pump for a humming sound. If the fel pmp[ isn't workin the most comon problem on these is the Inertia switch failing. Try resetting it (the inertia switch is located in the cargo area behind one of the acces panles sualy on the driver side, refer to your hains manuel.) If the switch fails to reset un plug it and run a jumper wire between the two contacts in the harness. If truck still fails to start and fuel pump isn't runnig check fuses and fuel pump relay. If you aren't getting spark you need a new crank shaft position sensor. these are spendy and hard to replace. with out actualy being there it is hard for me to tell exactly what the cause is. Try talking to your local mechanic they would know of some other common problems to look into

If it turns over, it has nothing to do with the neutral selector switch, as another answerer diagnosed it. You can troubleshoot your car very well with this link:

Also, www.naxja.org is a great technical forum for the Jeep XJ, (Jeep Cherokee) - they will be very helpful if you have technical questions. the site is a real godsend.

Always start with the simplest possible cause and work on from there. Assuming the engine is cranking, just not firing...
Is there gas in the tank?
Is the fuel pump coming on?
Pull a spark plug & wire and hold it (away from the hole and any gas!). Is there a spark when you turn the key?

Trade it in and get a dog, a dog can roll over and play dead just like your jeep, but a dog can also catch a frisbee and fetch a stick.
Try getting your jeep to perform like that!

2 things to check.first,is it getting gas to the injectors and 2nd hows the spark, pull 1 of the plug wires off and stick a old plug in the wire and have someone crank the engine and check for spark.

...everything being equal... there is a little kinda-sorta plug in thing on the fire wall back by the drivers side... it has two wires that plu into it.. it is a light gray colored kinda hard material replicable fuse (solenoid)... if it's a Chrysler jeep.
that solenoid will let it crank like crazy but it wont file... its easily replicable and inexpensive but will shut you down... Ask the auto parts guy about the fire fall mounted solenoid in Chrysler products
