Finding black worms (like earthworms, but almost black) on the floor. What are they??

We have a dog and a cat, and over the past few weeks we've found 5 of these worms. They are about 2-4 inches long, about as skinny as the stick on a Q-tip is, and very dark. They're alive when we find them too. We know that they must be coming from our pets, but don't know which one (maybe it's both) or what they are. Please help!!!

They sound like roundworm, but roundworm aren't almost black.

IF they are coming from the pets, then they both likely are infested, you'll need to treat them both anyhow. I would take the worms and the pets to the vet and ask him.

I would be interested to know what they are tho if you do go for a diagnosis.

Can you see legs? Because they sound like millipedes, which aren't exactly worms. Get some Diatomaceous Earth from either Lowe's or Home Depot and place it around the cracks and crevices of your home/apartment. That should do the trick for keeping the 'worms' away and out of your sight; and furthermore, it's more environmentally safe and sound than pesticides.

I have five years of Vet-tech experience and I have never heard of any black worms coming from either dogs or cats. What you are describing to me sounds like millipedes (thousand legs), and their legs are so small, that unless you are willing to get right up their with them on the floor, you are never going to see their legs.

I hope that this information helps you. ;-)

  • make a vet appointment and bring both of your pets. Worms can be eliminated easily with the right medication.

take them both to the vet, along with a sample of the worm. don't deworm them yourselves.
