The size of your garden has nothing to do with your ability to provide a good home for a dog. Many people with large estates are terrible owners because they're too lazy/indifferent to interact with their dogs in a meaningful way. Plan on walking your dog daily and as long as you don't get an extremely high energy dog, you'll be fine.

A lot of people will tell you to get a small dog but that is not always the case, for example Great Danes and Mastiffs are the largest dogs in the world but are considered to be some of the best apartment dogs. I have a Cane Corso Mastiff (95 lbs plus) and live in a townhouse with a small back yard and she has done very well. Your best bet is to look into the type you would like to get and then contact breeders and learn all you can about the breed. Most pet stores don't have a clue about the type of dogs they sell and their needs.

The last thing to remember is that all dogs need to be walked as often as possible no mater what the breed. This will keep them physically and mentally fit and it also is one of the best things you can do to establish your role as leader.

People have pets in apartments so why not? The important question is: can you walk your dog daily regardless of the weather? Seeing the name granny makes me think that you may not want a dog that is hyper and always on the go. Another thought is your lifestyle. Do you travel and if so can the dog go with you or would it be stuck in a kennel a lot of the time. I hope you have a little grass in your yard because when the dog wants to go in the middle of the night, are you going to walk it?

    Hi!

That doesn't really matter as long as you can take the dog out for a good walk each day to maybe a local park or fields nearby.

They would only need a small garden for their little 'piddles' first thing in the morning and last thing at night!

    Best of luck!

    Hi Granny!

There are lots of really nice dogs in the dogs homes. I got my dog from Bristol (uk) dogs home 4 years ago and shes so lovely. But also very active (im 30 so its ok to go running with her). There are older dogs in the homes that don't need to run so much and are more than greatful for a walk and some tlc...would recommend jack russels (though they can be snappy so choose carefully)...or definatly west highland terriers..or any cross with a west highland. something smaller though because a bigger dog will need a lot of space and exercise.

Hope you find your perfect companion. Dogs are wonderful

My yard is quite small, I have westie, she gets walked for 1/2hour three times a day and she's seems really happy. Plenty of walkies is the answer, if you've not got time for this then you've no time for a dog. If you know someone that can check on her during the day whilst you're at work then that'll be even better. Millie comes to work with me.

I just spent the weekend with friends and their gorgeous 7yr old staffy, they had a reasonable patch of garden, but no bigger than about 8mtrsx4 I'd say. She was such a 'people' dog she only went outside to do her business really, and was very happy just to mosey around the house most of the day, obviously walking is neccessary, but from what I've seen they are very low maintenance and loving (altho it cud just be her nature), and they are very protective and intelligent too. good luck with your search :-)

well who cares if you have a small garden [not in a mean way] the dog is gona be in your yard and if you get little puppies that don't grow like a chuaua they sleep most of the day and they usually dont like to be outside in less they are using the restroom

Get a lazy dog, or a tiny breed that doesn't need much exercise. We've had a few different breeds. I reccommend a (long-hair) Chihuahua, their only drawback is most of them don't like strangers & bark loudly.

They are very loyal and sweet to their owners.

You should make the commitment to walk your dog twice a day and get a dog whose energy level matches your own. If you are more sendentary get a dog that isn't a runner. If you are very active a sedentary dog isn't for you.

It is more about the breed than the size.
