How can we curb violence in today's society?

It's quite sad to see how the cancer of violence has eaten deep into the fabric of today's society. You turn on the news, you hear of people being gunned down in schools, shopping malls, on the street etc. Gangsterism is on the rise in many cities, guns are sold like candies in every nook and cranny - this is quite lamentable and absolutely a woeful state of affair. How can we rid today's society of violence? What is your take.

I completely agree - we need to do something. But the question is, how far will we as a society go to combat the horrible situation that we are in already.

First, lets look at the government. Do we want to let the government become more of a "Big Brother" than they already are, or not even do we want it, but can we tolerate that?

If so, and the "Majority" of the people do not have a problem with that, then we can set up even more laws to attempt to rid ourselves from the "criminal type" and get the violence to end nationwide, then we can concentrate on other countries.

If not, then the people have to take charge, and I personally do not see that being a "real" choice to end the violence, it might even get worse.

What is really disturbing is the kids these days. Just take a look on YouTube, or any other video site and search for one specific word - "fight" and see what comes up - there is way too much of it going on these days.

Personally, I do not think it will get better until we raise our kids in a "peaceful" environment - and it will take generations of that to become popular and end the cycle of violence.

Honestly, I wish we could revert back to the 60's or early 70's when Peace and Love ruled!

I really don't think that violence is anymore prevelent today than it was 100 to even 1000 years ago, it is just more broadcast.

Look back in history all the violence that has taken place; the Goths sacked Rome, the crusades, viking conquests, and countless other violent acts that were carried out in history. The only difference is that it was less heard of and what was going on in the next state or country was only heard of by the kings, generals, leaders, clergy, travelers, etc., and later to commoners through newspapers, telegraphs, etc.

In the little town that I live in, if the only way we heard outside news was through a newspaper, I wouldn't think we were that bad off. Not that much goes on around my part of the country, the biggest event recently was the fire in Bardstown Ky that killed the family of 10 people.

So violence isn't any worse than it has ever been, it is just broadcast at a rate that has never been possible at any other time in history.

Here is a list of simple but effective measures in a rough order of importance:

    - Implement zero tolerance on violent crimes. If you attempt to murder or rape someone you go to jail forever. (a few mitigating circumstances taken into account). ONE STRIKE, YOU OUT! This gets the violent people off the street for good, and sends a serious message to the rest of us.

    - Full tolerance on drugs. The drug laws are totally counterproductive and feed the mafia and gang syndicates with billions of dollars a month. This should be our tax money! Educate the kids to stay off drugs, don't arrest the drug users.

    - Outlaw handguns. How prevalent are people walking around with guns? This creates fear that leads to more people wanting guns. It is ugly, dangerous, and unnecessary. It also eliminates a lot of accidental deaths.

    - Create a reasonable social safety net. National health care, better schools, better preschools, more family leave, and better Social Security. These are simple and effective tools to building better families, and creating a more secure society. Security will reduce fear, which will reduce violence.

    - Eliminate the death penalty. Reduce the institutionalized need for revenge. Life in prison is good enough punishment and helps people focus on prevention and justice.

    - X-ratings for violent TV and movies. Make it a crime to show kids slasher movies. I talk to grade school kids all the time who watch movies that make me puke. This is child abuse, but is not illegal.

If you look these over and agree, you are probably not a Republican. So go out there and VOTE!

Meet violence with kindness, anger with compassion and hate with equanimity. It is impossible for us to forcibly change other all you can do is to set a good example.

I think the root cause of all these worldwide local violence is drugs. So the best way we can do is to stop drug trafficking.
