I use cool whip instead of sour cream, it is a matter of choice and preference. Also, its yummy, I love the lighter sweet taste.

I wouldn't use cool whip and sour cream interchangeably... for that I would substitute plain unflavored yogurt. Has the same texture and sour taste. But if a recipe is still good with a lighter, sweeter taste, then I say go for it and try the cool whip! =0)

Source(s): So I just looked up what ambrosia salad was, and I think that it would taste good with cool whip or sour cream, either way...

I dont think you can use cool whip and sour cream interchangeably. They have different tastes and textures (depending on the brand/fat content of the sour cream)

Yes, it will be a little sweeter in taste and lighter in texture.
