Becoming an Art Teacher is not a joke. There is great reward in teaching this magnificent subject but there is a heavy burden that comes with it. Art is loosing its luster through modern technology, as each generation pass. First of all, in order to receive teaching credentials, it takes more than enjoying painting for a hobbie.

Art has to come from within your soul. It is like Pope Julius II once described Michelangelo, one who has paint that runs through his veins....

You must not only live to breath art, but you must also love the idea of sharing that knowledge with others. You must have a strong sense of education and knowledge in art.

You must be capable of knowing how to translate or define what art is to young people. The work of your students will reflect your expertise and ability to convey your knowledge and abilities. This is the most challenging because art goes very far beyond a pencil, paper, paint brush, etc... ..young kids don't understand this. You have to teach them; I have found that many adults lack knowledge and understanding in art as well.

It would be your job to teach these children all the element of design while demonstrating how these elements are visually all around us.

You need patience, you need to be VERY organized. YOU will need to double major. I recommend you pursue a BA in Fine Arts at a school which specializes in Art. Then go to another University and major in Art Education. If you want to take a short cut, go to a college that offers Art Education.

Just remember, you have to live and breath it. It needs to be the center essence of your life. Without it you are not worthy.

You should look at Universities that have a School of Art and an Art Education major. You will get a good range of studio classes and learn many types of media as well as Art history.

You should not rely on making a living as a painter - a lot of self-marketing goes into that as well as artistic talent. You may make connections at your university if it supports a good art community that will help you with that. A lot of Artists are supported by public grant money so you have to learn your way around applications and assistantships and other sources of income besides sale of work.

You can use the college search link below to find Universities with Art majors in the geographic area you want.

I majored in Fine Art instead of Art Edu. because it had better studio classes, thinking I would take an education minor and teach, but after a year in college, when I visited my former school and saw how hard a high school art teacher has to work to make kids behave - I dropped that major and found something else. Don't plan on that unless you really WANT to teach.

Unfortunately, openings for art teachers are few. I recommend you also find an additional subject to teach, while you wait for an art job opening. I wanted to be an art teacher. I started by majoring in art at College. Then I realized how much I liked math, also. So I switched to the elementary school teaching major. Then I did my 5th year for a teaching credential. I got my credential (california) and can teach elementary school, middle school core, art single subject (because of the extra undergrad units) or math single subject (also because of the extra undergrad units). I have been teaching since 1995 at a middle school. My school has an Art teacher, but when they need an extra art class, they come to me. These days I teach mostly math. When our art teacher retires, I probably could take the position, but I think I prefer Math at this point. We will see!

More than likely, you go to school for education and major in art education. I can imagine that if you'd like to take a double major you could also major in painting or you could minor in it. Temple University in Philadelphia has one of the best Education departments in the country and it also has a well known art school.

If you are going into teaching to make more money than painting, you may be disappointed. You'll never get rich teaching. However, you can teach and paint of the side. One of the benefits of teaching is that you have a schedule that is conducive to other pursuits as well. That way, you may be able to pursue both passions. Most people don't even go after one.

Stay with what you love, and not only can you study to become and accredited teacher, but if you have an specific art skill you are good at through years of practice (example say you have been painting Easter eggs since you were 6) You can start an independent class. You can usually get space at a YMCA or local Artist association, or rent small space one day a week, from another art studio. You can charge a small fee for attendants who just want a new skill or hobby, and help pay for school, while gaining field credits.

people who have been sewing or knitting or doing pottery often have classes like this a couple days a week, they advertise in local papers, on-line like craigslist, and with business card which are like $10 for 1000 of them from staples. good luck

I don't know much about art careers, but if you're really passionate about art, you should take advantage of any opportunity you can find to teach art. Start your own business if you can, or offer to tutor people in painting for some money. This is all stuff you can do in your spare time while you work at a better paying job, or pursue a degree in something.
