Why are there no black athletes in swimming?

Black athletes are superior in some sports. They are bright, fast, muscular. I understand, that expensive sports are elusive for the broader public, including black kids. But why don't we have black swimmers? Swimming is cheap, everywhere, most schools have it. My own wife is black and she doesn't like water, is there a gene?

There probably is they are just not famous yet. And my good friend has told me she doesn't like to swim because it wrecks her hair.

Okay, everyone's commenting and saying there are and that you should go see the movie 'Pride.' Well, it is true there are but there are very very few, at least where I live.

In competitive swimming, some teams hold 'invitationals' which are basically meets where you compete and several [i'm talking at least 10] teams are invited. Usually at the invitationals there are about 200 swimmers there, but only about 5 swimmers.

This is just a guess, but i think since black people tend to be so much more coordinated than us white folk and all :] that they tend to do the sports that are more fun and hand-eye coordination type things.

And it's just a myth that black people don't like water, although it tends to be true.

There are/have been quite a few African American swimmers.

Swimming is a sport that we here in America see very little of. Maybe once a year around the time of the NCAA swimming championships or possibly once every four years when the Olympics roll around.

I don’t think that it is a fair assessment to say its genetics or economically based. I just don’t think that there is much interest here in the United States in watching a swim meet on Saturday afternoon when there is a football/basketball/baseball game on.

Well, I don't really know what you're saying because I think A LOT of swimmers are black. At every meet I'm at, there are many black swimmers. And now think about the movie "Pride" that came out last fri the 23rd. thats ALL bout black swimmers. check it out.

There are plenty of black swimmers, they are just overlooked. It doesn't mean there's no black swimmers. There was a black man on the WINNING men's 400 or 200 relay, and he swam with Michal Phelps.

There are. Did you watch the men's USA team win the relay at the world championships this week?

There are! I'm on a swim team, and this guy who is my really good friend is black! He's actually pretty good. (but you know im better) lol

There r black athletes swimming here from other countries.

  • There are many African-American swimmers out there (i.e. Cullen Jones), you probably just don't take the time to notice it.
