That was an amazing book! It's about a man named Edmond Dantes who is imprisoned unjustly. He escapes from his cell and aquires a treasure, which he uses to help him take revenge on his enemies - the people who imprisoned him. During this quest for vengence, he goes under the name "The Count of Monte Cristo" (hence the title of the book.) For further information, see the wikipedia article.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an awesome story! Alexander Dumas tells a brilliant story of a young man you is unjustly accused and sent to prison with no real trial and then succeeds after many years to escape that same prison. While in prison he meets a fellow prisoner who teaches him to be a person of nobility and where a treasure is buried. Calling himself the count of Monte Cristo, he enters society and you'll have to read the book for the rest!! Check you library or bookstore for a copy.

I agree with everyone elses assessment but wanted to add one thing. Dumas wrote this as a serial, (as did Charles Dickens). Every week was a new chapter. You'll find many abridgements but try to read the unabridged. It reads well even today.

    One wonderfully awesomely fantabulous book.

Err. I have it on my comp, and frequently read portions of it.

Basically, there's a nice young guy who is about to be made the captain of a trader ship, and is also about to marry a beautiful girl called Mercedes.

This makes him the object of envy, and his rival in love ( A spanish fisherman called Danglers) and his rival at job the ship purser Fernand Mondego hatch a diabolical plan.

They write an anonymous letter accusing him of being a Napoleon's spy. This leads to his being sent to prison for life on his marriage evening. His bride eventually marries Danglers, while his father starvs to death.

In prison, he meets a rabbi who is supposed to be mad, but is not. This guy teaches him different languages and arts to fight the ennui of solitary confinement.

Eventually, The hero escapes, finds a great treasure and becomes rich enough to buy a counthood. Returns to the city of Paris where the three villains ( I forgot to mention the corrupt judge who condemned Dantes to jail, to protect his( the judge's) father who actually was Napoleon's man) have all risen to the very top strata of French aristocracy.

How he takes his revenge and what happens next you 'll have to read to find out.

FYI--THis book was based on a real character. One edition has the facts that Dumas based his story on, but I no longer have it, so I would suggest trying to find it on the internet.

  • That is a good book...haven't read it but seen the movie and I liked the story.

This novel is very similar to our Jose Rizal's (National Hero) novel, El Filibusterismo. Both narratives illustrate a man's will to avenge himself and reclaim his beloved fiancée. He craftily devises a plan of revenge and retribution by a change in identity.
