I have a Denon AVR1906 Receiver, what are the best sounding bookshelf speakers to use for the fronts?

My budget is about $400

Update:

I'm looking for strong/tight/quick midbass, clear/natural midrange and

accurate/well defined treble that is smooth, not overly bright/exaggerated or harsh.

Update 2:

I'm using a Velodyne VRP-1000 powered subwoofer.

I don't need the speakers to produce subwoofer-like lows.

I need midbass that is around

80-160HZ.

Not knowing your criteria for sound, here are a three value leaders that stand out to me from a sea of good models in this price range...

    Silverline Audio Minuet

    JMlab Chorus 706 S

    BIC Acoustech HT-64

Feel free to e-mail me anytime if you want to discuss as to the specifics of what you are looking for in sound quality, and I would be glad to narrow it down further for you and/or tailor the choice to best match your criteria from my experience.

Flap had a lot of great information. I have martin logan's I love them. Definitive Technology is very good as well... However I'd start off by looking at Bowers and Wilkins products. Make sure you have a good surge protector before all your equipment to remove any ac noise from being amplified by the components.

Also always run the audio directly from the source to the amplifier never run it into the tv and then out, the quality of the signal will be so compromised. Many people doing that experience a loud hiss in the speakers which is distortion by the tv itself.

For cables I like audioquest the best followed by monster cable. Don't let guys at the store determine what you want to spend. Don't spend more than you are willing to on a cable. With a receiver it's already going to be a tough choice to hear a difference in a cable. Spend your money on a good speaker that will make more of a difference.

Your receiver is a good choice and make sure to tambre match all you speakers with the same series.

Speakers are a very individual thing to purchase. I recommend listening to any potential speakers with a wide array of music for at least 15 minutes a piece.

I would stay away from the big box stores who, with there equipment, will only allow you to listen to a few of their picks for music that is tailored to make the bass rumble and the highs to be crisp, in an environment that you will never live in i.e. 30ft ceilings, 20,000 square feet of space, noise from all around, music from other areas in the store! Not a good way to sample a speaker, if you ask me.

Note big box store are selling what appear as really go name brand at really good prices? The consumer doesn't know model numbers and a Klipsh is a Klipsh right ? WRONG! They have the manufacture make a "special" (not good retarded) line of speakers sacrificing quality and materials to maximize profit. The model numbers are almost the same but pay attention to where the dashes are! Don't be fooled.

I recommend looking for a small store or one that has listening rooms, most professional retailers are more than happy to let you listen in store to your music (nothing objectionable) to make a purchase and will facilitate the process. Try that in Best Buy and see how long it takes to get the manager harping at you! ( I used to manage a store and this was discouraged because the company new they were selling crap!)

On that note my personal favorites are:

    Klipsh

    Boston Acoustics

    Definitive Technologies

Martin Logan ( no bookshelf models yet.)

see below for my picks note they are not all under $400 dollars but good things are worth saving for.

It's really tough to buy quality speakers for $400. Flap's advice was excellent. I'd recommend that you look at speakers that cost twice that in the stores and then buy second hand units on e-bay. In your price range, I'd recommend Paradigm Reference 20s or 40s if you can find some. I also go along with the B&Ws - go with the 600 series. If you can find them look for the old style 805 Matrix. They are awesome sounding speakers and originally sold for $1000 each..
