Luxating patella surgery?
My 11 year old Westie was diagnosed with luxating patella. Grade 3.
Diagnosed with Addison Disease, 2004. 2.5 Pred daily, docp every 28 days, Cosequin 2xdaily., pepcid for stomach upset. My concern is the surgery and the effect it will have on his Addison's.
We had to change vets after the first diagnosis. He had put my dog on Metcam and nearly killed him Thank God for my inuition and quick judgment to call the animal poison control and contact addisonsdogs.com. By the way a great support group!
Now we are going to a new vet and he will be setting up an appointment with a surgeon. The surgeon will do a new evaluation.
I just didn't want my little guy to have another setback. How dangerous is this surgery for an AD dog ? Is it worth putting him through this type of surgery?

Unless your 11 year old Westie is in pain and not getting around I would never consider surgery on his knee (patella). Another thing to consider when considering quality of life is that your dog is now 11 years old. How long does your dog have to live with Addison's and the effects of daily medication that it should be spending that time recuperating from major orthopedic surgery? It sounds tome like your new vet is more interested in making money than considering practical protocols.

Well, I don't know enough about Addison's disease, but I do know that my friend's Yorkie had that luxating patella surgery when he was about 2 and he had a difficult recovery. He's fine now but I remember him being very sore and lethargic. So maybe this surgery could be difficult for an older dog with health problems.

My Golden Retriever had to have that similar surgical operation. usually huge canines don't have this mission, it really is constantly small canines like yours. they'll shave the leg thoroughly and could dig out lots of the knee cap, i'm exceedingly certain, so as that the knee could have more advantageous to carry it in. You canines shouldn't cope with to stroll on the leg for a lengthy time period, he ought to limp round on 3 legs until eventually he feels he can placed it down. My golden had to have this surgical operation two times. the first time we placed her in a rehab health center and had all the bells and whistles (rubdown and water treatment mainly), yet at the same time as it occurred back, we merely saved her at domicile. We merely made certain to apply ice and warm temperature packs some circumstances an afternoon. warm for a pair minutes and then chilly for a pair, etc. The healthcare specialist ought to allow you to comprehend what to do after the surgical operation. i'm hoping this facilitates a touch.
