NO IT IS NOT A TIVO. Do not do it.

If you have a DirecTV Tivo then you can fix it pretty simply depending on what is going bad. Usually it is the hard drive. if this is the case then you can purchase the Software for the DirecTV Tivo and put it onto a new larger hard drive. I have upgraded 5 DirecTV Tivos ((Qty.2)SD-DVR40, Qty 2 DSR704, and Qty 1 HDVR2) with 200 and 250Gb hard drives to replace the 40Gb they came with. Check out these sites below. I have sent some sites and info that may help.

If you switch from the DirecTV tivo you will be disappointed.

If you want to enjoy your DirecTv Tivo you can set them up to network them onto your home network. This will allow you to have MRV (Multi Room Viewing- watch shows that are recorded on you other TD Tivo, HMO-Home Media Option allows you to use your PC as a Server and you can view your Pictures from your D Tivo and you can stream your MP3's onto the D Tivo too to listen to them.

First check out site #1 it has forums that explain how to hack your DirecTV Tivo and Tivo brand Tivo's so that you have Networking abilities on your D Tivo which allow MRV (multiroom Viewing if you have more than one D Tivo), HMO (Home media Option) which allows you to have a PC connected to your home network that can be used as a server for your MP3's and Pictures to be shown on your D Tivo. Once you hack the unit/s (HAS TO BE A SERIES 1 OR SERIES 2 DirecTV Tivo or Series 1 and Series 2 Tivo) you can apply some programs so that you can download the shows/movies from the decrypted programs stored on your D Tivo onto a PC for veiwing/Burning onto a DVD. If you have more questions I can give you alot more details if you email me. I have used these site below to aid me in Hacking 5 DirecTV Tivos (Qty2-SD-DVR40, HDVR2,Qty2- DSR704). I have HMO, MRV, can access over the internet with gotomydvr.com, can download shows/movies from all the units.

Site #2 is where you purchase the software necessary to upgrade the D Tivo, look for either their kits or if you want to upgrade yourself look at InstantCake 3.1 or 6.2, PTVnet, Slicer. (InstantCake is the operating system/ software displays you see on the screen, PTVnet is the software to boot the ISO disk you download onto your PC when you connect a NEW harddrive and it enables the USB ports and allows networking, The Slicer lets you get/receive upgrade from DirecTV without losing all your previous hacks upon software upgrades.)

#3 is a forum to get the other necessary software patches to allow you to decrypt the DirecTV signal before it is stored onto the D Tivos harddrive. And a patch to allow downloads of the shows/movies from the D Tivo. (Superpatch-67all-nutkase, and superpatch-62a, Tytool 10R4, and others)

#4 a forum on HOW TO and questions and answers

#5 a GREAT display of instruction with pics on how to remove the hard drive form the Tivo unit and install all the hacks)

#1 www.dvrplayground.com (Forum and instructions on how to hack units)

#2 www.dvrupgrade.com (site to purchase the DirecTV linux software to upgrade to a LARGE harddrive and enable the USB ports for networking)

    #3 http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/

    #4 www.tivocommunity.com

    #5 http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os6hack.ph... (for Version 6.2)

#6 http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os4hackrid... (for Software Version other than 6.2)

Hope this helps, and have fun. Any other questions feel free to email me.

It's different software, that takes awhile to get used to. The one thing that might make it worth it though is that the DVR+ gives you 100hours of recording time which, odds are, is more than you're getting with the tivo you have right now. DTV sold Tivo so it doesn't make those boxes anymore and is trying to phase them out with the DVR+ so that all the customers are using the same software. Also with the DVR+ you don't need a phone line connected unless you plan on ordering payperviews with your remote on that box because it gets upgrades through the satellite unlike Tivo which used the phone line for software updates.

The DVR is not a TiVo. Only if the actualy satellite box says TiVo on it. I would go with the DVR instead of the TiVo though. I am not a fan of TiVo at all, but that is my opinion.

DrecTv's new DVR+ IS NOT a Tivo.I have just lately gotten my hands on the DVR+ and I am not impressed with it.If you want a DirecTivo go to weaknees, com. They have all kinds of Tivo receivers and upgrade kits as well as offering repair and upgrades of your existing unit. There is also a link for weaknees in this forum's page if you look for it too.

No, their newer DVR models do not have TiVo software. They use a different system that DirectTV created. It works but not as nice as TiVo's interface.

If it doesn't say tivo then it isn't. Ask them if it is tivo brand AND get their name telling them you'll send it back if it isn't. If it isn't tivo it should be cheaper monthly. My cable company sent my "tivo" and it was "moxi" which isn't as good in my opinion.
