How do I access the "Onboard computer" in a Ford Festive, 1992?

Update:

I'm familiar with the GM key to access the computer, and the wire. I also know on the Cadillac, you use the A/C and on switch to access the computer. The Festiva doesn't have the little diagnostic black box under the steering column.

The car often dies at stop lites, etc. but not while driving. It smells as if its flooded. I thought fuel control sensor, but wanted to check computer before attempting to repair it, and I will repair it.

Thanks

On most cars with onboard computers, there are 2 ways to do it: the dealership way, with a handheld device that plugs into the car somewhere, and the cheap and easy way you can do it at home.

I'm not sure how you would do it for your car, but I will give you two examples, and you can see what I mean.

Once you get the idea, you'll get a feel for what to look for, and perhaps someone will have a more specific answer.

    1. On old eclipses and talons during that time, you could take a 10 cent 12 volt LED light and touch the contacts to the two diagonally opposite metal terminals inside the plug where the diagnostic computer would jack in. The error code would flash on the light. You could look it up from there in the shop manual.

    2. On a 92 supra, you can simply turn everything off. You use a small piece of wire to short across two specific terminals in the diagnostic jack input, then, turn on the car, but don't crank it. The engine diagnostic light in the dash will flash an error code that you can look up in the shop manual, or, on the internet.

There's bound to be some kind of extremely cheap and easy way to take care of this. Knowing that it's possible is half the battle. Use google to search for key words like festiva and 'diagnostic codes'.

The diagnostic jack will look like something that a complicated plug would plug into, but nothing is plugged into it. It might be in the engine compartment in or around a fuse box, or under the dash, similar location.

Good luck. If I have more time I'll look on google myself for a little while and see if I can dig something up.

There should be an OBD (on board diagnostic)port. Usually just under the steering column. Look in your owners manual if its not there.

i own a shop, and i have a question for you ,why do you want to access it,there's no repair you can make to it,if its bad you can replace it,but that's something that doesn't need to be messed with,if its working leave it alone,or as the old saying goes if its not broke don't try and fix it,good luck hope this helps.
