Do I have any recourse? The IRS took my federal & state tax refund for a school loan.?
It's a 9 yr old loan, but I've been homeless & mainly unemployed since then. I specifically had extra taken out of my seasonal job's paycheck so that I could get an apartment. I didn't have a mailing address to be forewarned. Anything I can do?

If you have a defaulted Student Loan your refund is automatically offset to pay on the debt. You can contact the Financial Management Services to get a number for the Lending Agency that you owe so you can try to get payments going with them to possibly avoid this in the future.

No, not anything you can do. When you owe debts like taxes, child support, or student loans, your refunds will be taken to pay them.
Sorry, and good luck to you. Next time, rather than having extra withheld, just have the amount withheld that you'll owe and put the rest away someplace toward the apartment.

if it's a 9 y/o loan who knows how much interets has built up and for how many more years the irs will be keeping your returns...pay your bills and loans on time and they will have no reason to keep your returns

Contact the IRS and get ph # for the "TaxAdvocate", they can explain how it may be possible to get the money back if you can show extreme hardship, in your case worth a shot.

You owe, they take. That's just the way somethings are.
