First please have your friend go to another doctor 30 doctors if needed find someone who will help. Pain management is a must oxycontin is a very serious drug to be addicted to. Just concerned about the liver and kidneys.
You are right about the ortho/neuro doctors go see them asap they will want to take some more x rays bones move and they can help. good luck on that pain medicine get off of that slowly.

Wow!! It's unbelievable how Drs can do that. I would suggest getting a different Dr. right away. Start from scratch, new x-rays, labs, everything. He is probably so addicted to the drug. Is he willing to see a new Dr? That may be a problem too. Definetly see someone who specializes in pain management if you can. My mom has had tons of back surgeries. She managed it for a long time with bio-feedback, staying healthy and strong. She used a tens unit for a while. Theres a lot of options without using drugs. Good Luck.

I have had 32 surgeries (none on my back) I just wreck joints, hernias, one heart surgery and had my sinus rebuilt from damage done by a dentist. Knee replacement (need it done on one knee 4 times in a year -yep there is a lawsuit)
I have found ICE works best, 20-min of an ice bag is the greatest
I have overdose on Aleve giving myself anemia and a bleeding stomach.
I don't like the side effect of Oxycontin and Hydro codeine as I can't sleep and always felt nauseous - I do use morphine sulfate 15mg 3 times a day with permission to double up once a day with an extra pill. I work with a specialist who I see monthly - between the pills and ice, I get the best results - Seems all the surgeries on my knee has left me in chronic pain

He's now basically addicted to heroin. Vicodin, oxycontin, etc...are opiat based drugs, they are very addictive. Oxy is a time released drug, so it is extremely powerful. Five years on this drug is a long time, he is physically addicted to it. He should go to a rehab, they'll most likely put him on methodone, which is the drug they use for heroin addicts. Its sad because then they'll get addicted to the methodone. Good luck. You might have him look into negligence against the doctor. (that is if you are really telling the whole story and he didn't jump from doctor to doctor or buy it illegally on the street)

Time to get a new MD....Does your friend need a referral for her insurance? Has your friend asked for a referral. Time to get stern with your MD..They are not gods, I work with them everyday....Go into the appt with a list of demands and say hey we have tried XYZ, we haven't tried ABC, and I want this....If he say's no, then ask for a detailed reason why, and you can always take it up with the medical board....
