My Son is 5 months old, hasn't learned how to crawl yet, But already thinks he can walk around on his own?
Is he really ready for a walker?

Yes get him a walker. My first son was walking on his own at 8 months old but my second son didn't walk on his own til he was almost 11 months. My third son will be 6 months old in 4 days and he thinks that he can walk on his own and he loves being able to move around in his walker and scoot all over the floor.

Instead of a walker (where he "sits" and scoots himself inside a little wheeled cart), consider a toy that he holds for support and uses to walk (like one of those cars that start as a walking support and then move to a scooty-car).
Studies have shown that using a walker can keep children from developing their leg muscles properly, whereas having something for support that he pushes around makes them use ALL of the leg muscles that they'll need while walking. Just make sure that it won't fall over when he puts his weight on it, in case he uses it for practice to stand up as well.
As far as being ready - not all children crawl before they walk. My brother didn't, and he was better in sports than all of us (I'm oldest of 4), with some of the best balance. It's very possible he's ready, but don't be disappointed if it's a passing fad that he doesn't pick up again until later, at least you'll still have the steadying aspect instead of having to buy it later.

walkers can actually be dangerous and actually do nothing as far as "teaching" a baby to walk. and 5 months is the "early" crawling stage, just becuase he's not there yet, doesn't mean he's behind. I recommend an exersaucer. It helps to build up strength in the legs, and balance. Other than that, just use yourself as a crutch. Hold his hands and walk him around, its the best way to teach him. Don't rush him tho, once he starts moving u'll wish u could just knock him down!! LOL

My daughter is almost five months and loves to stand up. I got her a Jumperoo. Try one of those.
