Excel provides enhanced abilities for working with tabels, data sheets and binding informations through databases. IT's used mostly because it's a Microsoft product first and second it's very easy to learn and offers great support for those who work in this area.
There are many online tutorials for it, all you'll have to do is practice.

Excel is an application generically known as a spreadsheet. It's primary function is to do math although it can be used for making list and tables also. It's primary usefulness is in performing multiple math calculation based on entered numbers is an array (sheet) on the screen. If any of the enter numbers are altered Excel automatically recalculates all the results that depended on that number. It's best simply described as a calculator except it can show you many numbers and results at once and do many math operations seeming simultaneously - all shown in boxes on the screen. If you don't have a need to do a lot of math calculations, it will seem useless to you. For many who do, it's a very valuable tool. I'm an engineer and I've used Excel almost daily for years. I'm not sure how I could work without it. Excel is to someone who works with numbers a lot like a word processor (Word) is to someone who writes a lot.

Excel is an extremely powerful tool - it's a giant calculator, a database and a chart maker in one.
I am assuming you have Excel 2003. Here are a couple of links for you.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA01116128... This link will get you started with the basics in Excel (start with Get to Know Excel - Create your first Workbook).
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/CH01000373... This link will help you create a chart (select Charts 1: how to create a chart first and then move on to other "courses".
You don't need Excel to run these courses but you won't able to run the practice sessions without it.
You may want to take an into to Excel course. There are plenty of inexpensive programs out in the real world - check with local schools and community clubs to see if they are offering any courses.
If you need any help with a particular task drop me a line. I can point you in the right direction.

Think of Excel as a big piece of paper with a built-in calculator. You can use number and formulas everywhere. You can change any value and all your formulas will instantly give you new results. It can even add dates.
Excel is not free, you can try downloading OpenOffice, which is similar to Excel except the new 2007, and buy something like "Excel for Dummies", which is fun to read.

Excel is a spreadsheet application. It's very intuitive and you become familiar with it in a few minutes of using it. I don't think that you can learn it online for free. You need to install it on your computer. It's part of MS Office and you can get a 60 day trial version from here:

You'll find plenty of tutorials if you google search for "Excel Tutorials"

Excel is a very powerful tool. No doubt, you can do simple as well as complex calculation in excel, but most importantly you can do data analysis.
No matter how large data you are having, you can analyse that large data very easily with excel.
For data analysis in excel, you have various excel features like sorting, filtering, conditional formatting and What if analysis(goal seek and scenarios).
In excel 2013 they have also added data analysis pack
You can also transform data into visual form using charts features in excel
There are many websites where you can learn excel for free
