Any info on Kihea , Maui area?
Looking for general info on Kihea Maui - safety, surroundings, etc. How far drive to Lahaina, I've read alot on the Hana hwy but can't find how long the drive to Hana from Airport area. Is it worth driving half-way since it's a tough road?

I love kehei...stay at the Kamaole Sands condos...they are very nice..beach is right across the street...its is very relaxing...don't miss Shaka Pizza...they will deliver to the pool...its very light...checkout Fred's for margaritas and yummy tacos...go to the library and check out books....road to Hana is beautiful...but seriously..just go halfway..no need to waste the whole day...come on pretty is pretty and the road is intense..if you are the driver you are working hard rather than enjoying yourself...everyone says go early...but I disagree...leave the Paai area around 10 AM and you will avoid all the traffic and if you go halfway you will turn around before the traffic comes back the other way...Its very safe in Hawaii...just don't lock your car..leave windows down and act like you live there...hang something from the rear view mirror to look local.

Kihei Maui is a fairly safe community. The drive to Lahaina will most likely take you a few hours (if you drive the speed limit and don't get stuck behind a tourist going 10 mph!)
As far as the drive to Hana, if you're going to do Hana at all, you should do it all the way. Driving halfway doesn't do it justice AND since the road is only 2 lanes, turning around halfway is hazardous in general. The road is not tough (as it's paved).....just curvy!

Maui is a fairly safe island, But like anywhere You have to watch what You are doing.
Road to Hana is awesome but here are a few tips, Don't get in a hurry, Stop at all the pull outs and snoop around, there are a lot of sights to be seen that cant be seen from road. Go early and i suggest on a sat or sun so You don't face any road construction.
We left Kaanapali around 6:15 am and was starting the roar to Hana by 7, bring a lunch and have a good time. And watch out for the tourists in afternoon stopping in middle of road to take pics ( Very rude and dangerous ) Round trip was 13 hrs but we stopped everywhere to enjoy the day. Road is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, Don't take the tours as they will zip right thru and You will miss a lot
Have a great time

Kihei is generally safe. Hana highway is a VERY long drive and if you really want to do it, it'd be a full day excursion. I found it rather boring (if you have any children i dont recommend going). It starts about 30-45 minutes away from Kihei and the drive is 3 hours one way and 3 hours back approx. The roads are terrible since there are 600 pin curves which you can't see the other side. 54 bridges and its on a cliff. However the scenery is beautiful and you get to see different things, i don't found it was worth going.

Don't do the road to HANA. 100% complete boring!
The best part of the island to me is in Wailea.
You will be safe in Maui. Don't worry...you will be fine!
