When will we no longer care if a golfer is black or white? The distinction itself makes us racist!?
Yahoo sports ran an article today asking where all of the other black golfers are. They say that Tiger Woods knocked down social barriers by becoming the first black golfer to win the Masters. But why does it matter? American media seperates African Americans (and any other sort of minority) into this seperate class of people, rather than respecting them as equals. It's no wonder so many people are racist when even the media, which is trying to "knock down" the barriers of racism, are instructing us that it's somehow inherently different for a black man to win the Masters than a white man! There should be no distinction between white man or black. In my eyes, it doesn't matter what color you are. You are a special person to win the Masters or any other sort of major sporting event. So why do we have to discriminate against African Americans and continue to focus on how they are "different" than us? What is fueling racism in our culture, you ask? Counter-racism.

You're absolutely right! I saw the article and wondered why Yahoo would condone such a blatantly racist, at best and insensitive, at least, article. What was the point? Were they asking why there are so few Afro/American golfers? Or were they singling out Woods as being exceptional for a black man who happens to golf? It's perfectly apparent that Woods is an exceptional golfer. Why bring color/race into it at all?

Everybody made a big fuss about Larry Bird being a white basketball player. Whats the difference? I agree there should be no distinction but as long as races of people keep demanding that they be given retribution for things that happened in the past, having nothing to do with anyone today, bringing attention to themselves, than there will always be a distinction between races. It isn't just the media and the "whites" that need to realize that we are no different from one another.

It almost sounds like a rerun of Jackie Robinson doesn't it? An athletes abilities should do the talking and nothing else, Although I do find the "showboating" from some athletes (Terrell Owens,Dennis Rodman for ex..) pretty distasteful and disrespectful. I hate to see the kids emulate THAT type of behaviour. But white athletes (Romanowski, Lambeer) do it too. There's people who play sports and there are athletes. As long as we teach our kids the difference, hopefully this racism thing will diminish within sports.

people can say all they want to about how things 'should' be...the fact of the matter is they havent seen how it was...only up until my lifetime has it even started where being of other or different nationalities are accepted for who they are or mixed nationality couples/kids is common place...I was bussed into another school where people rocked the bus, would throw things at us, spit on us and we would get in fights often...and Im asian american, raised in black neighborhoods...Ive seen where there are race riots yearly in jr high school and high school and people get carjacked in their own neighborhoods...I worked for the american military and saw where there was affirmative action placing, meaning filling minority quotas for foreman and mgt spots...do you know what thats like, can you even imagine...so now, whatever the press can get a hold of, they bite down and make whatever issue will help them sell commercial spots...because viewership/readership means more money for ads...do most people even realize that tiger is a quarter black and more than half asian? Is there a reason he isnt called asian in the press...well it sells better , of course...if you consider that in my lifetime blacks, or most any other nationalites couldnt eat or room in certain parts or places in our country then one would say we have come a long ways...some people, mostly younger people...who really dont have any idea what that is really about, or was like...rant rave and preach...but their parents...or grandparents...were the ones who were, or still are most guilty of that despicable prejuduce...its a lot like the news really, if it was all good news or no sensationalism it wouldnt sell...

It is not okay for Jamie Foxx to make such a comment. It is just some people lack the courage to engage in debate on race. No public figure has the guts to question Blacks in regards to race, lest they be called a racist themselves.Double-standards like this will only continue to feed the flames of racial animosity. Any time one race is entitled to do something that another race can not is an example of racism.

I agree. It should all be based on their skill in playing the game and the merit of the talent of the player, rather than the color of the players skin.
While I agree that it is great that Tiger Woods sets an example to everyone that people of all shapes, sizes and colors can be great at something--it does, at least in the way Yahoo sports wrote it--undermine his great talent for golf.

It will always be about black and white. That's just how it always will be. It's not right but it's how it is.
