Guys, I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. It periodically downloads updates from microsoft. I want to backup all the updates bcoz I'm gonna format my computer this week. Any suggesions, how to backup and restore ?

As I know True Image is the only backup software that supports Vista. With True Image you will be able to make a bootable disk to restore your system after format.     you can either find all the downloaded files and copy them to CD or DVD for more space, or just do them over when you re-install. That's what I would do.
