Can an employer stop paynment on a payroll check?
If you were terminated on a friday and the pay check did not come out until the next week adn you recieved in th e mail and it was rightfully your for the work you preformed the week you were terminated can they actually stop payment on it ? It was already shorted and wrong
It did bounce and the payment was stopped on the 15th of feb and I cashed the chheck on jan 31 and now I have acollection agency calling me from the store I cashed it at telling me the check had a stop payment on it.. the check was for 650. and was suppose to have been for 1300.00 I have now contacted a lawyer

You can always stop payment before a check has been cashed.
If they were wrong in doing it you could bring legal action.

No, they cannot decide to not pay you for work that was already completed because they don't like you. Here are the exceptions:
1. You have an employment contract and it allows them to do it for some special reason.
2. The amount of the check was incorrect and they issued you a new check for the correct amount.
If it isn't either one of the above, then you have a good case against them. Kindly ask them for the money you are owed PLUS any bank service charges that occured because the check you had was bad. If they refuse, write to your state's labor department. In my state, the law says they need to give you DOUBLE the amount they owe you. Check with your state's laws.
