It's great...it means you feel they are as close to you as blood relatives...that they are as close to having unconditional love for you (and vice versa) than people will have without being parent/child or blood related in some way.
Friends who are like family often are very long term friends...just like your family, they tend to stay in your life versus casual friends that come and go.

when people say she's like family they mean that the person has been through so much with you and your family, that they have been around a while and are trust worthy of all your secrets.....someone you love like you love your family
