Mental institutions of the early 19th - mid 20th century?

Do you know anyone or a story about someone close to you that were in one at that time and whats the story. Its so sad ive just read about a place called The Willard Hosptial and gosh its crazy how 54 000 individuals passed through during the 126 years of its operation and how they either treated patients by elctro shocking or nueroleptic drugs which mostly sedated patients so they didnt know how small their living quarters were. They didnt even cure anyone...HECTIC!!Whats the point...Oh and my gosh most of the people didnt even really have problems to start off with.

Update:

Please ad the name of the hosptial id love to check them out...

Check out Bedlam Insane Asylum in England, late twentieth century, I think--could be off with the time. This place was reknowned for the extreme abuse of the patients.

I don't know how they got there if they did not have problems to begin with. But the mental hospital in our town has been there for over one hundred years. I've been told that they have gone through a number of different methods to control patients and when one doesn't work they try another. They chained them up and treated them like animals a very long time ago. Then when medications came along that sedated them to a zombie like state they tried that. Now they use medications but still use shock therapy on some of them that do not respond to other things. I am just very grateful for my health even though I do have social anxiety disorder.

i do no longer think of it rather is real. The classics are in basic terms "classic" because of the fact they have been good adequate to persevere via time. modern-day novels have yet to be positioned to the try, yet i'm valuable in a hundred years, there will be some from at present that are nevertheless well-known. once you're searching for good books, you have have been given to look somewhat greater durable than the teenybopper and the "grownup romance/homicide secret" sections of Barnes&Noble. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries had their literary trash, too. P.S. Are you valuable you would be judging "literacy benefit" whilst your person grammar is so undesirable? EDIT: I even have no longer something to ask the 1st poster. He/she has dreadful communication skills, and clearly did no longer understand the question, yet that doesn't exchange my answer to you. i'm no longer being an @ss; my respond replaced into completely valid. you may no longer actual tell me that the previous century has no longer yielded ANY form of staggering literature, and in case you declare that to be the case, you for sure have not executed lots analyzing. EDIT: in case you may criticize an entire era of writers such as you're more suitable, i will criticize your grammar. regardless of the undeniable fact that i've got confidence English isn't your community language, so i'm prepared to decrease you *some* slack, however I nevertheless think of that's form of hypocritical of you to then turn around and positioned down tens of millions of novels written in a language you do no longer completely carry close. additionally, i'm petty adequate to end this with: i'm going to provide it a relax once you do.
