I really think the guy was tripping, and he loved the girl even though he didn't hardly know her. He wanted to show her his crimson and clover trip.

He wanted her to trip with him, (among other things).

Argytune it was Tommy James and the Shondells, that's why I thought psychedelic. Joan Jett did a remake.

Hmmm...I always thought "Crimson & Clover" was recorded first by Tommy James and the Shondells.

During the 'psychedelic 60s'---lots of songs were released that didn't make a whole lot of sense...which is probably the reason some of 'em remain popular?

Listeners are STILL trying to figure them out!

This is what I found online. There are some more comments on it on the website. Tommy James constructed this slice of psychedelia from his favorite color and his favorite flower. In our interview with Tommy James, he told us: "They were just two of my favorite words that came together. Actually, it was one morning as I was getting up out of bed, and it just came to me, those two words. And it sounded so poetic. I had no idea what it meant, or if it meant anything. They were just two of my favorite words. And Mike Vale and I – bass player – actually wrote another song called 'Crimson and Clover.' And it just wasn't quite there. And I ended up writing 'Crimson and Clover' with my drummer, Pete Lucia, who has since passed away."

It concern the deflowering of a virgin in a field of clover when young and innocent and how it happens again and again in each generation. This came to me in a vision when high.
