FYI: Dentists do NOT use "white" crowns on kids. We do not use porcelain on kids.
Adult teeth are significantly larger than kids teeth, and this is the biggest reason why it can be used on adults. You need a certain amount of space all around the tooth to have room for the porcelain. Ask anyone who has had a crown and they are likely to tell you that their tooth was "ground down to a little spike or nub." We need that much room, otherwise, the porcelain will chip and crack off the metal substructure once you try to eat.
In kids, we don't have that room, so we use pre-made metal forms. This metal is not the metal used in fillings. It's mostly made of stainless steel- the same stuff your silverware is made of. It's strong and sturdy, it can be made in thin sheets so it doesn't take up a lot of room, and it doesn't react.
BTW, if your daughter sees you freaking out, you're likely to teach her to dislike dentists as much as you do. That's unfortunate in general, but in her case, it'd be especially sad since she's going to have more early exposure than do most kids.
Consult another dentist to get a second opinion, and express your concerns. A competent dentist will help you help your daughter and find a reasonable solution to solve her problem.

Get another opinion (or several). A lot of dentists are out to make a quick buck and the fact that he won't do white caps on front teeth....sounds like he doesn't have the training.

Find another dentist. Silver fillings may have mercury in and that causes cancer. You NEED white caps.
