A little research to see if your laptop is up to the specs of the operating system you are trying to install. You can get this information from the website of the OS you are interested in. If it is Windows then that would be the Microsoft CD. Once you find out if your computer is compatable, then purchase the media that is compatable with your computer. Most media comes on CD, but newer distributions are coming out on DVD. If you are installing from CD or DVD where compatable the process is usually the same. Make sure that your computer is set to boot from CD in the BIOS. Then just insert the CD/DVD into the drive and follow the prompts on the screen.
