I adopted a dog who looks like either a poodle or bichon frise. How can I tell the difference?

He has somewhat tight curls of white fur all over (except the ears, which have poofy, wavy fur). Fur is about 1/2" long all over body. His eyes are front set, dark and slightly oval. His tail has minimal fur at base but has a poof of long wavy hair from about half way up all the way to the tip. His muzzle is what I'd call average, not too long and not too short and is a perfect size for his face. He stands about 12" at shoulders and weighs 11 lbs. I hope that description helps, but if not please let me know what further info is needed. Thank you!

Update:

I don't know how to add a picture (any ideas on if that is possible???) but I can give you a link to the humane society's pic where he was adopted from:

A correct eye for a poodle is oval, correct for a Bichon is round.

His size could be either Bichon or Miniature Poodle!

This is a tough call w/out being able to see the dog! Try googling images of both and comparing your dog, and read both breed standards at www.akc.org.

    They're both great breeds!

A picture would be best, but from your description I would wager a guess of Bichon.

Poodles tend to be tall dogs with long slender legs and dainty feet. They will have slightly longer ears (the flesh, not the fur) than a bichon. Most poodles have docked tails, which makes them about 1/2 the size of regular tails, and the hair on poodle tails is usually poufy, not wavy. They also usually have slender faces and slightly long noses. Bichons have a generally heavier bone structure and stand a little lower to the ground with stronger legs. Bichons are also known for having big, dark eyes.

Here are some pictures to help you:
