Why does my new hard drive show smaller than rating?

Just bought a new Maxtor 200 GB hard drive, but when I hook it up, it shows only 130 MB. I am sure this has something to do with the age of the computer, but can anyone tell me why? Thanks.

Update:

Just read the install instructions and discovered that some older computers do not handle hard drives over 137 GB correctly. So my question has changed to: Can I still use this hard drive without adding additional hardware (as suggested by the instruction manual)? I only need about 80 GB, but my computer says the new drive is only 130 MB.

Update 2:

Just read the install instructions and discovered that some older computers do not handle hard drives over 137 GB correctly. I only need about 80 GB, but my computer says the new drive is only 130 MB.

Update 3:

Checked BIOS and my computer now shows a 137 GB hard drive, which apparently is the limit for this computer. I am going to install the op sys and hope for the best. But any helpful info will be appreciated.

Update 4:

Thanks for the help so far. But here's some added info.

I'm using Win2000 Pro, only because I'm doing this for a friend who wants Win2000 on all computers at his business. Although the BIOS says the new hard drive is 137GB, the Win2000 installation process says it's only 130 MB. This really confuses me.

If you are using the Windows XP with Service pack 2 CD for installation you will probably be able to format to the full 200 GB size, otherwise format to 137 GB and then once Windows is installed you can format the remaining 60 + GB and use it as a second partition. I hope this helps.

Yes you can still use it also you can partition the new drive basically doing that will turn your HD into two logical drives.
