Is the Poisoned Pet Food scandal a scary enough example of how our lax FDA guidlines can kill us next?

I want to believe that the whole thing was an unfortunate accident, but as it is traced to China-- we can't expect a full disclosure as to how the source was actually introduced or if it was an actual accident. Here's the scary part. If you read up on the last couple years of the FDA's performance plans--there is no mention of increasing their efforts to inspect imported foods despite the fact that the number of foods being imported is skyrocketing.

I don't think the FDA has anything to do with pet food. Our food supply is only one of our vulnerabilities.

The FDA does regulate pet food through the Center for Vet. Medicine. I think the problem with this issue is not the FDA, but the manufacturers who are responsible for the raw materials that go into their products. The FDA doesn't test or inspect every last thing that comes into this country, but the manufacturers should be!

The FDA does not regulate pet food only people food. The government bureacracy is big enough - we surely don't need anymore of it. A little thing called capitalism prevents outbreaks in people food. You see any company that serves up tainted food is doomed to failure because people will not buy it anymore. I have to write this as simple as possible since it is evident that you are a product of a public school system.

I wonder how much information on this whole mess is real.

There have not been many poisonings, nationwide. How many really? Is this new or are dogs and cats dying from poisoned food all the time? I mean, dogs eat poison crap all the time and how often do they do a pet autopsy?

And every time I see a TV story on this they show pictures of IAMS dog food cans, but IAMS has not been implicated in any of the poisonings. It's just that the stations grap whatever stock footage they can find in their archives. Terrible sloppy news coverage and who knows how far it goes.

The pet food industry is self regulating. Self-regulation works great until it completely fails, which it always does. I'm hoping that the FDA can at least keep veterinary grade Chinese wheat out of my Corn Flakes. They're not THAT incompetent, are they?

Thank you for the information. I will definitely pass it on to friends/ breeder friends. Please keep us informed. My condolences to the breeders. Add on: BSL did not blame NutroMax she only stated that the NutroMax puppy food was the only common denominator to the two litters and how quickly the pups got sick after eating the food. I'm sure we will be notified on the results of the test. This isn't a witch hunt just information for pet owners.

I think it has more to do with our trade practices with China, they OWN us now.
