I've never even heard of someone calling a redhead, anything other than a... redhead - same as brunette, blonde...

Calling any name to make someone ashamed of their physical appearance is bigotry.

But hey, that's not common in all of the United States. There are some areas in the midwest, that have towns full of redheads - you'd be just another face...

I'm a redhead and I can honestly say i've never been discriminated against or bullied because of my hair colour. The media makes us out to be less attractive than blondes or brunettes for some reason. Redheaded men seem to get it worse than us girls though.

I really doubt it at present time. It probably could have something to do with the past history between Ireland, Scottland, and England. There are quite a few redheads of Irish decent and therefore that probably has something to do with it. But no, I really doubt its a problem anymore. By the way, I am a Irish, Scoth, Native American mix but appear to be Irish and when touring England a few years back everyone acted allright to me, but my hair is a reddish brown and perhaps no one picked up on it. In other words, back in the day it probably was a problem but not now.

I wouldn't say 'discriminated' against in Britain, I mean someone is not going to be refused a job because they're ginger...unless they're Chris Evans, lol.

As far as I'm aware, negative feelings about red hair didn''t originate with fights between the English, Scots and Irish. I've known red-heads in the Celtic countries who get stick too.

One theory is that it stemmed from the feared Danish Viking invaders, many of whom were thought to have red hair. Also, in the middle-ages/ early mod period, red hair was linked to black magic, as red is the colour associated with the devil.

Now days, people aren't aware of the old superstitions surrounding red hair. It is merely disliked here because it is unusual and stands out from the crowd. Which is pretty pathetic, but there you go.

This is total crap. My wife is a genuine redhead, is intelligent, has a very good and responsible job and has never been discriminated against in her life. I do not think people would dare.

I can only imagine you are talking about women with dyed coloured hair who would be regarded totally differently.

They do get made fun of here in England but are not discriminated against. Personally, i think redheaded women are hot.

The first law on this matter was passed in 1979 by Margaret Thatcher. It's complicated, but in summary it forced employers and providers of services to always ensure that redheads "gingas" were placed last in any queue. It was a particular bone of contention in the 1987 election when Neil Kinnock stood against Mrs Thatcher for the premiership. He had the double misfortune of being a ginga AND Welsh! Unsurprisingly, he lost.. The law remains on the statute books to this day - although most observers and legal experts believe that the recently passed Human Rights Act would overrule the 1979 Act - However, this has yet to be tested in the courts.

I'm British. Redheads, are lovely people. That Nicole Roberts, of Girls Aloud, always, gets stick about, her hair and appearance. I feel, sorry, for her.

Yes thankfully we have the gingers under control since the laws passed under the last Conservative government.

It is now illegal to be found in possession of freckles. No longer can you resemble a matchstick, a carrot, an orang utan or a highland cow.

They are much happier now with our policy of separate development. They have their own buses and toilets. No more curly ginger hairs in our bathrooms.

Genetic scientists are working on a cure as we speak. In meantime there are condoms and dyes at reasonable prices at every port.

I Here in North America where I live red heads are at a premium. instead of being discriminated against they are pursued.
