does anyone think australia is the most awesome country in the world?

If there are only the aussies there , sure !

Australia is mostly stable, peaceful and good. We have never had a civil war or an internal coup; we have never been taken over. We are a high contributor to the world and all in all it is remarkable that we remain a peaceful, intelligent, free county in spite of all odds. I believe that we have been born into the luckiest country in the world.

Having said that, I wish we had never come here. We have achieved our peaceful nation by committing genocide against one of the oldest human races in the world - the aborigines. The aboriginal culture is - was - the oldest continual culture in the world. It existed in an unbroken line for over 40,000 years, longer than any other single racial group in the world, and it has taken us 200 years to destroy this racial group. We have also managed to decimate a native landscape that was so unique and ancient, that we have destroyed in 50 years an ecosystem which evolved over several billion years. This ecosystem will never recover from the last 100 years of wheat and sheep farming.

Read Bill Bryson's hilarious and poignant book Down Under for an educated, insightful overview of Australia seen from a foreigner's view. It is a wonderful read that teaches a great deal and really captures the essence of Australia.

The world is an amazing, but brutal, place.
