There are two books that I've read based in Australia although they're slightly along the lines of historical romance but both are based in the 20th century. They've still stayed with me for many years since I've read them and both have very powerful storylines (where you actually come away learning something) although they might leave you with a tear at the end of them.
The Thorn Birds - Colleen McCullough
Jessica - Bryce Courtenay

I don't like this author, but alot of people do. Try Colin Thiele. he writes book set in south australian place such as the coorong.....with Storm boy, and the sun on the stubble............which is set i think in tanunda or somewhere else in the barossa valley region in 1930.

Have you tried John Marsden? His 'tomorrow after the war began' series is excellent, is based in Australia and has nothing to do with magic or anything like that.
I would strongly recommend them!! :-)
