Controversy. Who was the best top ten heavyweight champions who had no link of controversy to him?

Foreman - Ali: Foreman has stated himself he had to redeem himself..

Ali - Liston: I have a question posted about this please answer it if you have additional info.

Tyson: He should not be in your top ten any way, not to mention his controversies and I think no explanation is necessary.

Dempsey: Would not fight a black fighter.

Jack Johnson: Admitted he threw fights

Bonavena, Folley, Marciano: link to organized crime, don't shoot the messenger but I have heard these things and read them. Bonavena and Folley shouldn't be in top ten anyway.

If the heavyweight is mentioned above do not put him on your list.

If I left anyone off you put it on your explanation with your top ten noncontroversial best heavyweights

Update:

Big T : That is not even funny

Update 2:

Big T if you are meaning Holyfield in the top 10, I apologize. If you mean him as controversial, I don't.

Update 3:

First of all, Bluedevil, I am shocked who you did not put on your top ten list. His initials are J.F.

Pinoy you have fighters listed who I have as controversial. So thanks for the trouble ---Your list would have Louis first, Frazier second, Lennox Lewis third, Holyfield, Douglas, Jones.

    Hey Hon'

I hate to give a bad answer. But I do believe the true answer is there are not 10 Heavyweight Champions that lack conroversy. I don't even think there is one actually. Especially after the '80's kicked in and there were multiple champions. A situation that has been getting worse makes every title holder contoversial to a degree. I'll take a shot at it though.

-George Foreman (even though he gave up the titles and was still the "linnear champion")

-Michael Spinks (even though he had a close decision against Holmes, he at least allowed a remarch... with the same result)

-Floyd Patterson (I can't think of anything controversial while he was a pro, the NYBC is a different story though)

-James Douglas (he didn't do everything right, but I do not think controversy is the word to describe anything related to him)

-I suppose that's it for me. Anyone before Louis wouldn't fight blacks. Anyone after the 80's (particularly 90's when the titles split) had contraversy concerning who the "real" champion was.)

Well, you can't blame a girl for trying. Sorry I couldn't do a better job for you.

Keith this is a very thought provoking question sir and definetly not easy to answer as many of the heavyweight champs had some kind of controversy regarding them. Marciano being Italian knew some crime figures, but they were merely fans and did not dare to ask him do anything dishonest. Floyd Patterson was very classy but after losing to Liston, tried to hide his identity as he was so embarassed so I guess that counts him out too. Of course until Joe Louis beat Braddock for the title in 1937, no black fighter even got an opportunity to fight for the title which is of course a disgrace. I think that Gene Tunney was very classy and a great fighter but he never fought a black fighter so it narrows my list down to the following fighters: Good question sir!

Joe Louis was a role model for millions both black and white. He always conducted himself with dignity and class and never viewed as being controversial.

Ezzard Charles was also a very classy fighter and many consider him to be one of the most underrated champs.

Jersey Joe Walcott was very classy and never controversial. He of course got better as he got older.

    Thank you sir!

Keith thanks for reminding me about Joe Frazier as he certainly deserves to be on there too, Joe was certainly classy. Also, there are several fighters that come to my mind as not being controversial are James J. Braddock, George Foreman, Buster Douglas, and Ken Norton. I knew when I left my computer today that I had left off some significant and classy fighters non controversial.

    3. JOE LOUIS - PRETTY BOY!

    4. JOE FRAISER - "SMOKING!!"

    5. JACK DEMPSEY - HATE TO SAY IT...BUT HE'S UP THERE

    6. LENNOX LOUIS - BOXING SCEINCE...BUNCH OF ENGLISH S**t!

    7. GORGE FORMAN - IF HE WASN'T FIGHTING AT HIS 40'S I WOULDN'T PUT HIM ON THE TOP 10

    8. HOLYFIELD - GOOD.....CERTIANLY NOT THE BEST

    9. BUSTER DOUGLAS - JUST BECAUSE HE BEAT TYSON "THE EAR EATER"

    10. ROY JONES JR. - I KNOW HE DIDN'T WIN A HEAVY WEIGHT TITLE BUT IF HE STARTED EARLIER I THINK HE WOULD'VE MADE A RUN FOR THE MONEY!
