I grew up in both America and Japan living with the flip-flop of values.

    The differences I have noticed

Education: The Japanese spend much of their time on studies and afterschool sports, it is not as tolerated for failing a grade level as it is here in the US. It is very much frowned upon if you do not make your studies a priority.

Family: The Japanese take care of extended familiy more often the the American family. Japanese are less likely to place aging parents into a care facility. However the Americans tend to be more family oriented when they have small children, Americans tend take more family type vacations. The Japanese women are the ones that primarily care for the household, while the men venture out into the business world.

Career: Though many households in todays society have both mother and father working in both America and Japan. Careers for women have been focused on so much in the past couple decades that the birth rate is falling. The Japanese are looking first at their career before thinking of starting a family. The American society tends to go with the flow and if love and baby come into the picture most tend to accept that and place the career on the back burner (women) Men in both cultures tend to go out as a lead dog hoping to cross the finish line in the career status before others. In japan if you are a high ranking business man they tend to do a lot of drinking and tend to have affairs, and the wives tend to ignore it as long as the family is provided for. In the US no matter what kind of business let the wifey catch you cheat and you will be paying a lot of money after the divorce.

The divorce rate is high in America and it is growing in Japan but is not as close to what the American culture is,

America: pain to get married easy to get divorced

Japan: Pain to get married and still a pain to get divorced.

Wow. Well, on the bright side, remember that someone sent that to your husband, and he didn't seek it out. On the other side!.. that is rediculious! I especially hate all the parts about how the women are thinner, don't have to diet to look good... REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES!! When I see a woman without some meat and curves, I think of a 11yr old girl. We, as women, don't have to be slaves to our husbands to be good wives. I know I am a great wife, but I do demand respect from my husband. If any husband agrees with that article, HE is probably a crappy spouse with unrealistic expcetations. This isn't the 50's anymore.

Well, first of all, I would like to make certain that you do NOT listen to the first few posts.

"Communist bastards" - She is confusing Japan with China. China is Communist, and I wouldn't call the Chinese "bastards", either. China is changing rapidly, and much of it is possitive.

Prostitution is acceptable - Um... Historically prostitution was not as vilified as in the West, but it was never really viewed as a completely good thing. In modern Japan, prostitutes are looked down upon by the general population (Western influences have contributed, but the attitude was always there).

"You can't compare Japan to a nation where Britain dumped it's prisoners" - First of all, the United States is NOT that nation. Australia is where the British left their prisoners. Secondly, you can compare ANY nation to any other nation. Why couldn't Japan be compared with Australia?

To get to your question, I think looking up the historical concept of bushido will give you some background information:

I wouldn't say that America "has no values" as many suggest. American values are rooted in Christian values, while Japanese values are rooted in Buddhist, Shinto, Confucian, and Taoist values. The Japanese still place greater importance on ideas like filial piety, and the Japanese are a group-oriented society. A Japanese person always tries to think of the other person's needs and feelings before his/her own, and may go to great lengths not to offend the other person. A Japanese person is most comfortable if they feel that the other person is comfortable/pleased.

In America, society is based on the individual. People tend to think about their own needs and what benefits them before they consider the effects on others. This sounds selfish, but I am not saying that Americans do not think about others, they simply think MORE about themselves than Japanese ("Looking out for number one" - meaning: You have to fend for yourself) Americans are likely to feel guilty if the other person is not feeling well, but they are also more likely to have an "I'm glad I'm not you" or "I'd hate to be in your shoes" attitude.

I know it's wikipedia, but this website may at least provide you with more topics to explore:

Before thinking values and culture, please remember East Asia is not multiracial and multi cultural society like the US. Japan is in EastAsia.

98% population in Japan is Japanese.

95% is Han race in China.

98% is Han Chinese roots in Taiwan

Nearly 100% is Korean in S.Korea.

Japanese put the social group above the personality, but otherwise they respect anything personal.

The word of a Japanese is even stronger than the written contract in a business deal.

I used to visit this site: www.jref.com

Try it, there are tons of such discussions

I am Japanese studying in American right now (I will go back when I graduate)

First of all we are not "bastards"

Secondly, we do not find prostitution acceptable.

Thirdly we focus more on our entire soceity as a whole, rather than the individual (like in USA).

We also stress respect to elders and our ancestors

In Japan GROUP is more important than SELF, in US, SELF is more important than GROUP. In Japan Silence and is a beauty, in US it is considered weak.
