Start with wet hair and apply a thick gel that holds the hair but is not too sticky on your hands. Find the side parting. Start creating the "s" wave by pinching the hair between your first and second fingers and creating a strong ridge, directing hair with fine teeth of a comb. Work from the parting out to the hairline in approximately 1 1/2 " thick sections that are wide enough for you to control. Continue this direction until you reach face hairline. Using the comb to guide the hair around your fingertip create a pretty "c" shaping and reverse direction. Continue all over side of head. (This is not easy!) When you reach the nape area finish with pin curls in the same direction as the wave. Changing direction on the next row if a additional direction is needed. Yes, each curl is best held in place with a singe prong metal clip. Go to other side of parting and start working from parting out to hairline again. Finish as you did the other side. Allow to completely dry. Obviously if the hair has some natural movement this is much easier. But with practice you can successfully do this on straight hair. This is a true finger wave. A deep waving iron will give somewhat of the same wave pattern but not that 1920's feel.
