I am trying to remember the steps to a kids craft project?

Years ago I made "suncatchers" with kids. The kids colored in a pattern that was on regular white paper (I think they were supposed to use colored pencils, but it could have been crayons or markers). Once they colored the pattern in, they placed some baby oil on a cotton ball and rubbed the oil on the back side of the pattern. This created a glassy type effect. After the oil dried, a hole was punched at the top and a string was looped through in order to hang the "sun catcher".

Has anyone heard of this project? I would just like to know if I have remembered the details of the project properly.

Thanks

    Materials:

    white paper or card stock

markers, colored pencils or crayons (markers are brightest, but the others will work, too)

    scissors

    baby or cooking oil

    paper towels

ribbon, string or yarn for hanging

Have the kids color any design you want.

Wad up a paper towel and dip it in a saucer containing a small amount of oil.

Dab the oil all over until evenly covered but not dripping.

Let it soak in, then use a dry paper towel to remove any excess oil. (You could use cotton balls instead to apply the oil, but you really need paper towels for the blotting.)

Cut the suncatchers into any shape you want and make a small hole about half an inch from the top. Cut the ribbon, string or yarn about 12 inches long and thread it through the hole. Tie it to make a hanging loop.

Yes, I do recall something like that. I think it needs wax crayons (plain old normal crayons) to work right. We called them stained-glass windows, but it was the same thing. I think you got all the steps in.

Another fun way to do that is to shave or grate wax crayons onto waxed paper. Get a good mix of pretty colors, but leave a little empty space so they won't run together too badly. Place the waxed paper on a folded old towel and place another old towel (not folded) over it. Iron it with a hot iron so the wax crayons melt. Carefully remove it from the towels and set it to cool. When it's cooled, cut out a shape of dark paper and tape this piece behind it. It's quite pretty. These can also be used for greeting cards.

here is one for a fall themed suncatcher. what theme is the project?

    Leafy Suncatcher

Spend some time outside gathering leaves. Cover your work surface with newspapers and sprinkle a small amount of crayon shavings on a piece of waxed paper. Arrange leaves on top. Sprinkle more crayon shavings and cover with another piece of wax paper. Place a piece of newspaper on top and iron with a warm iron until crayon shavings melt. Trim and hang in the window.
