Which is worse, being over dressed or being under dressed?

If you arrive at a party would you rather be wearing jeans when everyone else is wearing formal wear or be wearing formal wear when everyone else is wearing jeans?

In my opinion, arriving at a party as under dressed is worse than arriving at a party over dressed.

    For example, scenario 1:

You walk in wearing formal wear, and everyone else is in casual clothes. This is not a big deal, because you can change the style of your clothing into a more casual/classic style, which can compliment you.

    Scenario 2:

You walk in wearing jeans and everyone is wearing formal wear. This scenario is worse, not only because you stand out more, but also because theres a higher probablity of you getting embarrased and a lower possibilty of being able to play it off.

In conclusion, while overdressing may be uncomfortable, underaddressing is embarrasing.

Jeans at a formal party. I couldn't care less about what people think of how I dress and I wear jeans.

That's a tough one...both circumstances would be uncomfortable.

Having to choose one...I'd say it would be " worse " to be over-dressed when all others are casually dressed...jeans, shorts etc.

If you were under-dressed you could explain it well and make up for it with humor and being a comfortable, pleasant, easy to talk to guest. Take that opportunity to let your inner self shine in comfortable confidence and gentle ' strength '.

If you were over-dressed. . . you could still explain it...yet others may have more of a tendency to maybe not believe you and think you overdressed just to impress or trying to " outshine " others...even the host. They might misinterpret the over-dressed person as being a ' snob '.

Over dressing looks garish. Under dressed but smart looks nicer. Yes to the

jeans. I love jeans. You can buy them looking really nice but forget it. Just jeans

and maybe a little more formal top and jacket will do it. Simple jewelry. Casual

heels or in my case Western boots. I have butter soft Brahmas.

under dressed. you would not want to be the one wearing jeans when everyone else is wearing tuxes. at least if you showed up to a party in a tux and everyone else was in jeans you could take off the jacket and tie and just be in pants and a shirt.

I would definitely prefer under dressed. A person in jeans is at least comfortable. You look like total dork in a suit at a beach party.

  • Being under dressed is better because then you just seem cool, like you don't care about what you look like. At least thats how it seems in the movies.

It is never a bad thing to be over-dressed. Just hold your head high and be proud about it. I hate being under-dressed.

I think being over-dressed would be more embarrassing. It'd be like being the pink elephant in a room. The eyes would be all over you! probably negative eyes too :) under-dressing would just be more depressing, thats all.

Being underdressed at a formal event would be worse.
