Normal grey cockatiels are easy to sex but cockatiels that are different colours are a little harder.
If you could send a pic to my email that would be great and i could tell you what you have.
Here's a basic guide.
- Males sing and whistle more than females and will learn to talk. I breed cockatiels and never had a female that talks or whistles but they can screech!
- In grey cockatiels the male will have a bright yellow face (or white if he's a white face) and no barring or spots on the wings/tail. The female will have the barring and spots and will have a dull face, with not much colour in it at all
- In pearl cockatiels, the male will lose most of his pearling by the second moult and look like a normal grey cock. Some birds do keep some of their pearling but its very little compared to the female. Females will keep their pearling and some even have bright faces. Their pearling will be all over with the ideal pearl having some on the chest too. They may still have bars and dots on the wings/tail but some do have clear yellow tails.
- Pieds are very hard to tell as the redistribution of colour means that the normal signs are not there. Males can have dark faces and females can have bright faces so its best to tell by any Tail feathers that may have barring on them or the underside of the wings. They are best dna or surgical sexed if you want to know for sure as they're very hard to tell unless you see eggs!
- Any dilute, spangle, silver, cinnamon or other colours like this are the same as the normal greys just lighter. The males still have the clear tails and bright faces while the females retain their bars, dots and dull faces.
Another way is if you got the bird young notice any differences as it changes. Hens usually stay the same as juveniles while males will change once they moult.
Hope this helps!!!

Female cockatiels tend to have dots all the way up under their wings. If your cockatiel is young you may have to wait a while [year and a half or so] until you can REALLY tell.
Male cockatiels may have the dots but not all the way up his wing. One way to tell for sure would be to go to your avian vet and get a DNA test done. That should cost about $50. Hope this info helps.

If they are standard colors the male has a yellow face and bright orange cheek dots. The female's colors are much more muted.
With the fancier colors it can be harder to tell. Check this site out for more info: http://www.cockatiels.org/articles/genetics/mutati...

I know with parakeets the nose color differentiates a male from female. Males have a purple blue nose and females a pink.
As for cocktails if the face is yellow it is mostly likely a male. Young cocktails will not show face color for a while but you can ascertain the gender as males will whistle and carry on whereas females won't.

Males can learn to whistle easier than females. Some females DO whistle but it's harder to teach them. My friends aunt used to raise cockatiels and that is what she told me. I am sure that there is an easier way to tell but that is what I know. Hope this helps!
