To be quite honest, I think he was consumed by infatuation. People like to see this as the prototypal love story, and perhaps I would think so too, if it were not for the fact that at the beginning of the play, Romeo is violently "in love" with Rosamond. I don't think I was even aware of that character until I read the play for my college Shakespeare class.

Either way, Romeo did care deeply enough for Juliet to marry her, which is not something one typically does with a simple fling.

I think Romeo was a typical hormonal teenager. Don't we all believe what we have at that age is love and will last forever??? By the way Liath, it's Rosaline, not Rosamond. He was completely consumed by Rosaline at the beginning of the story, then one night at the ball he sees Juliet is like, "Hmmm. She's mighty pretty. I'm in love with her!" He jumps into infatuation or lust and thinks he is in love. But he's not.

    THANK YOU FOR ASKING!

No. I dont think he did.

You see, the way I think of it, Romeo was childish. He wasn't even fully over Rosaline before he declared his love for Juliet! And he was immature (how could he not have understood the implications of slaughtering Tybalt?)

I think to him, Juliet was just an obsession, and it seemed to me that he was emotionally weak, so weak that he couldnt live any longer with the thought of his new toy dead and gone.

I guess you've guessed im not a big R&J fan.....
