I would suggest staying somewhere between Mid Town and The Upper East/West Side--Preferably Mid Town. Mid Town is a tourist trap, however, I think it's safer. You're close to the trains and there are many restaurants and attractions in the area.
Tip--travel with friends and try not to get on the train late at night (get a cab).
