"Downtown Chicago"?

What is the residential population in downtown Chicago? I know the population of the entire city. If I knew the boundary that is considered downtown I could calculate the number. Help!

There's no single definition of "downtown". Pretty much everyone would include the Loop and area around North Michigan. This would extend roughly from Oak Street in the north to Roosevelt in the South and from about Clinton east to the lake. Some people would also include the heavily residential areas just north, west, and south of those boundaries. Central Chicago is quite heavily populated. Depending on your definition, you might come up with anywhere from about 75,000 to 250,000 people.

I agree with DMB on the loose "boundaries" of downtown, pretty good assessment. Anything further north would be Gold Coast, further south would be South Loop.

But again Downtown (unlike NYC) is not a neighborhood, but just used to refer to the central business and shopping district. In fact there are neighborhoods within Downtown (River North, Streeterville, Printers Row).

Source(s): http://www.wildonions.org/NeighborhoodsMap.htm This is a fun map, maybe a bit dated (no Bucktown, no South Loop) but a good starting point, and includes mini-hoods within the neighborhoods like St Bens, Budlong Woods, etc. Also know that Realtors tend to play loose with neighborhood boundaries, especially Lincoln Park, Bucktown and Logan Square.

Well, I would say the boundries of downtown would be Roosevelt to the south (since the neighborhood on the other side is called South Loop), Wacker to the north (past that is North Loop) and Halsted to the west (again, that area is called West Loop). Going east, downtown would theoritically end at Michigan ave, since the rest of it is considered the lakefront.
