I am going to be spending two months studying in Johannesburg - what are some of the "can't miss" places to visit while I am there?
I will be studying and living at Wits, so staying in Pretoria is out of the question.

Johannasbrug is a large metropolitan city, so decide what you want to do and then just find the place where it can be done.
The constitutional court and prison next to it is within walking distance of the Wits campus, and an amazing experience.
Guided tours to Soweto is a must. You can see African life, and many areas where the struggle took place.
I do however suggest you determine WHAT type of things you want to do, and then just determine when and where it is being done.
Have a look at the official Johburg website

Melville, Sandton, Gold Reef City, JHB zoo. I would suggest Hillbrow but unfortunately I haven't been around in quite a while [might have to get an armed guard these days?] Nightlife used to rock in the old days but I can't vouch for it now. Get hold of the JHB tourism guys and check them out. Stay away from city center!

Be careful there - it is a dangerous place. Nearby Pretoria is much nicer and safer and will still give you access to the local attractions...
Visit the enormous gold mines
Tour the ghetos
Sun City
Kruger National Park (a few hours away, but the best place I have visited in South Africa).
