In Iraq what distinguishes a Sunni, a Shia, and a Kurd?? Is it anything obvious?
I ask this question in order to try to understand why/how sectarian violence can have a target. Tho Sunni minority largely controlled Iraq under Saddam, is it the MEMORY of those who were in power that makes the Shia majority want "revenge"?

The Kurds are a minority group in Iraq. they are located in northern Iraq. they want their own homeland, Kurdistan. Shia Muslims are more religious in their beliefs. Strict interpretation of the Koran. Sunni Muslims are more worldly. They are secular in nature when it comes to Muslim law. Iran and Iraq are the only Muslim nations in the world who have a Shia/Shiite majority. The Sunni split from the strict handling of the Islamic Law is the main reason for their hatred. the Shia in Iraq are now getting even with the Sunni for the pain, suffering and torture endured during the Hussein reign. If things don't change soon, Iraq will likely be divided into 2 different nations.

The Shia and Sunnis are different sects of the Islamic faith. The Kurds are an ethnic group from a region called Kurdistan which is now split between Iraq, Turkey and Syria I believe.

Sunnis and Shias are both Arabs but with different religious denomonations. Kurds are an ethnic group who wants to grab lands from Iraq, Syria and Iran to set up their homeland. They are a violent ethnic group living mosly in landlocked places. In their apperance I do not think there is and apparent difference between them.
