How to obtain a mobile number in Australia?

I am going to migrate to Australia, but before that I am planning going to Perth for a few days and return to my actual country.

During this travel, can I get a valid mobile number in Australia and use it ? How long does it take to have a mobile number? Where can I get it?

Update:

more specifically, in Perth, where should I go to get this ? some shopping center, mall, store?

you can buy a sim card from a lot of places..... they are sold at post offices, mobile phone shops, some newsagents and even some supermarkets.... you will need to get a pre-paid sim card and this will cost you $30 and give you $30 worth of calls.... it is pretty easy to set up (a 5-10 minute phone call) and should work within the hour that you set it up... just make sure that your phone from your original country takes the same sim card and you should be fine... easy as!!

the best place to go in perth with a few phone shops to choose from is into perth city central in the shopping malls (murray and hay streets). just go into any shop and ask someone for directions because theres a few phone shops to choose from. a pre-paid phone sim card is the best thing because you can get it set up and working in a couple of hours. ask the shop assistant and they'll do it all for you. a few shop choices in perth i can think of are... OPTUS, telstra, virgin, phone zone etc. like i said there are quite a few to choose from. australians are very friendly usually so just ask for directions!

    goodluck :)

Easist way is to buy a Pre-Paid SIM card... Virgin Mobile have some which are specially priced for people who already have their own mobile, so you only have to pay for calls (not for a handset). They can be processed on the spot, and you can have a working number within a couple of hours of activation. :)

Cant be done. Due to data protection act. Imagine all the nuts who could hound innocent folk for sales or any other misdeeds that they fancied carrying out.
