Does pepper spray work to deter pets from planting areas?

Several of my neighbors have cats. These kitties have taken to digging around in my flower beds. My dog offers them no deterrent as she likes to "play" with them.

I've heard that pepper spray and even just sprinkled peppercorns can deter some animals. Is this a safe option? I'd rather not resort to chemicals or stand guard over my plants and asking neighbors to keep their cats under control is just silly. Are there better options?

I also have a neighbor dog that constantly escapes and knocks over the garbage cans in the alley. I was considering spraying the cans and the surrounding area with it too.

Update:

I'm not going to spray the ANIMALS! I'm going to spray the ground and plants! This isn't the kind of pepper spray used for self-defense. Did you read my question. Obviously, I'm looking for a safe option.

Update 2:

The section they have been digging is full of daffodils. lol!

Hello Beam me up, Nice name, and I bet you wished you could beam the cat´s that are coming into your garden & using it as a public loo, Yes you can use pepper powder , this will make theeir little bottom´s hot . But there is another way , sound´s silly but I have tried it and it works. Get some really thin wire , and nail the wire from one side of your flower bed to the other, say about hand high from the ground. The cat´s don´t go under it to get into the flower beds, & they wont jump over it. strange , don´t you think? it has something to do with their whisker´s touching the wire , I was told, But you try for yourself , it works

  • Hi...Spraying around your trouble areas may be effective for a day at most (considering it is dry). The problem is you will have to continue treating the areas everyday to have any effect. If it rains, the pepper spray will have no effect.

I can advise two options for the dog problem. Purchase Mace Muzzle. Spray the dog once in the face and your problem will be solved. Mace Muzzle is safe and proven effective in deterring cannines. Mace Muzzle is EPA approved and will not have no long term effects.

If you don't want to go that route you should look in an electronic dog repeller. They transmit a high frequency sound that will deter most cannines.

As for the cat problem, let me do some research and I will get back to you.

I've heard pepper spray works. I've used Liquid Fence to spray on flowers and shrubs that rabbits were constantly eating. It smells really foul and with repeated applications, it actually soaks into the plant so the plant's taste horrible when an animal eat them. So far all of my flowers and plants are free from rabbit munching. This might just work for cats and dogs as well and they might have a specific product just for cats. Good luck.

If you can't beat 'em, joint em!

Try planting catnip, or Germander marum (cat germander.) That should be much more interesting to the cats than your other plants. Put it in the vicinity, but not next to, the area you're having trouble guarding, and don't put anything you love nearby, because they'll chew it, roll in it, and generally tramp around it.

Both are attractive plants with nice, typical mint flowers. Catnip retreats to thick, furry leaves that persist through most of the winter.

I used plain white vinegar, I just sprinkled it around the area's that I didnt want my dogs doing there business and it totally worked. they dont like the smell of it and will go elsewhere. I also used it out front because my cat was using my bush as her bathroom and she no longer does. it is a safe effective way to get your animals to stay away from certain areas. and it is perfectly safe on plants.
