Could a slow flushing toilet & smelly shower drain be a clogged vent stack?
The toilet has been flushing slow for a few months. Nothing major but not as quickly as the other bathrooms in the house. Now i'm noticing a bad odor from the shower in the same bathroom, usually several hours after it was last used. This is a home built in 1962 and the pipes are very old. Nothing is backing up, but I'm wondering if the vent stack is blocked causing both issues? If so, would it be worth snaking it myself to see if that does anything?

4 AnswersDrama9 years agoHow much should I expect to pay in labor for granite counter top installation?
I'm trying to get an idea of the labor cost for a 50 sq ft galley kitchen granite counter top installation. I've found the product I like at $15 / Sq Ft, but I don't know what's a fair price to get someone to do the cuts and install. Just looking for a ballpark figure.
1 AnswerDecorating & Remodeling10 years agoTaping drywall seams, should I sand between coats?
I'm mudding & taping a newly hung drywall ceiling and I'm wondering if it's a good practice to sand in between the 1st and 2nd coats. Also, do the pro's do a final coat of compound over the entire ceiling, or just feather out the joints 12+ inches and then sand smooth? I've never done this large of an area and I want it to come out smooth without blemishes.
1 AnswerDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoCan I hook up a 12 volt fan to a 12 volt landscape transformer?
Here's my situation. I have an outdoor bar area with two built in refrigerators. There is plenty of air space behind them, but it can get hot in the summer time and I want to protect them from overheating. I'm going to put in a vent to the outside on the back of the bar area and I want to install a fan to pull hot air out.
I also have a 12 volt landscape lighting transformer under the counter area running a couple of bar lights. Can I purchase a 12 volt fan and run it directly off the landscape transformer, possibly putting a thermostat control in line so it kicks the fan on and off as needed?
3 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoCan I add an on off switch to a single low voltage (12v) outdoor light?
I have landscape lighting in my back yard running off a 900 watt transformer. I would like to have a single low voltage light that I can independently turn on and off near my bbq area, but I can't find low voltage on/off switches that I can wire up to just control one light. Is this possible and where can I find a switch like this?

1 AnswerCorporations1 decade agoHow to fix a leak in a flat roof area?
Our home has a wood shingle roof. In the back of the house the slope of the roof comes down to a narrow flat area approx 2 feet deep by about 25 feet wide. It spans the entire back of the house where our patio is and the patio cover attaches to the fascia board just below the flat area. This flat area appears to have been coated with a grey, flexible cement which has some cracked areas. Water seems to be pooling in these areas and is leaking down into the house but not more than just a few drips when it rains hard. What would be the best way for me to repair these cracked areas? Should I pull up as much of the cracked area as possible and recoat with the grey waterproofing roof cement? Should I re-coat the entire flat area and replace flashing etc. Any tips are appreciated.
I'm not hiring a roofer for this job as it's not something I can't fix myself and I just don't have the money to pay a grand or more for this type of repair.

4 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoWhat's the best way to grout brick veneer so the mortar doesn't get all over the brick?
I've installed brick veneer on some block posts and I'm to the grouting. I don't have a problem getting the right mortar consistency for using the grout bag, but I'm having problems keeping the mortar off the brick itself. I'm not striking the mortar, as I want to have overfilled (flush) looking grout lines. I'm not sure how to get the excess mortar off the grout line without smearing it into the bricks, which turns them white. Should I be waiting longer for the mortar grout to set up before getting rid of the excess? This job went from fun to frustrating has heck. Pro's..I need ya on this one. Thanks.
4 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoHow should I go about replacing my 2x6 garage rafters?
I have a 20 foot wide garage with 3, 2x6 rafters that span that length. There's plywood on top for storage, however since the house is over 40 years old, they're starting to dip in the middle. There's a couple of supports coming down from the roof joists to help hold them, but the bow is getting pretty bad. I want to replace all three and create a much sturdier platform up there for my storage. I can't buy 20 foot 2x6's, so could I create my own multi-lam beams or is there a better way to do this?

The front fascia board on my home, where the rain gutters attach, has some soft, dry rot areas that I need to replace prior to installing new gutters. Can I just cut out the bad areas and splice in some new lengths of wood or is there a better method?
I have construction and woodworking skills/tools, so ability isn't an issue. I just want to make sure I do it properly.
