I am flying and want to take a bottle of liquor as a gift.?
Does anyone know if this is illegal? Or if there are special rules (carry-on only) or anything I should know about first?
(Obviously it will be unopened.)
Uh, I want to take it with because they can't get the locally produced stuff where they live. It's called "variety."
And besides, I have never been in an airport before. I didn't know they sold liquor in there!

I'm assuming that you are flying within the US. In that case you will not be able to take a bottle of liquor or any other liquids over 3.4oz past the security check point. You will have to pack the liquor in your checked luggage. Make sure it is wrapped well (I suggest bubble wrap), and if possible, placed in a plastic bag. Try and place it in the center of your suitcase where it can be cushioned and protected by your clothing. I've seen how rough the baggage handlers are with bags, they literally throw things around.
There are some restrictions on how much alcohol and the types you can carry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/e...

How could it be illegal if liquor is sold in duty-free stores at the airport before you board your flight? It has to be carry-on because your baggage has already been checked by the time you get through to the departure lounge. Why bring liquor from home if you can buy it cheaper in the duty free. When I fly to Jamaica I buy a multi-carton of cigarettes (5 cartons of 200 cigarettes) in the duty free for almost the same price as a single carton costs in a normal store

If you're flying to or from, or on a domestic flight in the United States, and many other countries, it will have to be in your checked luggage as you can't bring liquids through the security in the airport. But I've brought bottles of wine (and liquor actually) in my suitcase in my checked luggage several times and never had any problems. It is not illegal and I've never had any problems with the bottle breaking or anything.
If you're travelling internationally, then the only other thing to keep in mind is the duty you're supposed to pay on bringing in alcohol. Bringing alcohol into the US - you're allowed one liter for free before you have to pay duty on it. Check www.tsa.gov for more about what you can and can't bring on board.

it has to be checked in. If you go to a country in the British Commonwealth (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc.) its most likely not going to be allowed.

Bring it in the bags you check, and they won't bother you. Good luck.

You'll have to check it in your luggage.
