Rocks & Minerals?

Does anyone know some good, yet inexpensive (under $20), books about rocks and minerals; more specifically how to classify and identify rocks and minerals? Pictures and detailed descriptions are a must. These books should be on a amateur or hobbyist level of reading.

I looked on amazon.com but didn't know which book was a good selection.

I do not know if these books even exist now? But years ago they use to have books out for general referencing called Golden Nature Guides! They had good detailed descriptions and pictures, some even showed the North American Maps in the bottom corner...to give you some idea on where you would find the 'Item' you were researching. They had books for Birds,Waterfowl,Zoology,Butterflys&Moths,Insects,Spiders&Arachnids,Seashells,-Marine and Freshwater Fishes,Weather/Meteorology and finally Rocks and Minerals! When I was younger...these books came in hard and paperback versions, and I would get hours of reading and learning from them! They were relatively inexpensive and appealing to the eye. I suppose you could look up the ISBN files...to see if any reproductions are available,or maybe even try E-Bay. But I am certain that you could find a bookstore that would have equally good books on Rocks an Minerals. They should'nt be too expensive, because they are not a really high sale item! Often the go on sale as well...at a 1/3 or even 1/2 price from their usual rated value! I hope this will give you some direction in your search! Also if you find an existing copy of the Golden Nature Guides at a library? You can write down the Interscholastic Book Number(ISBN)...and possibly find out if you can still order them,or get reproductions! Thx theerrander.

The one I used to use was called "Hand book of Rocks and

Minerals" It had a lot of pictures and very good descriptions,

I don't know however, if it is still available.

The Audubon Society collection has some really good basic books on a variety of subjects, and includes some really nice color pics and all... Could that help?
