I'm in pretty good shape...but have never jogged seriously...I only want to work up to about 2 miles/ day and the ability to do more once in awhile. How do I start out?

Buy a decent pair of shoes, break them in, then jog until your out of breathe and walk for a bit, then jog again, you need to put your heart rate at a certain range, not really sure what it needs to be but a rule of thumb is if you can sing your going too slow and if you cant talk your going too fast, after a week or two you should be able to jog at a pretty good clip the whole way. 2 miles sounds just about right.
Do you guys seriously talk to your doctor before exercising? I mean, dont you already know your own limitations? You people must be from the city.

The advice to check with your doctor and to wear quality jogging shoes is good. Take a certain number of minutes, 8 for example and jog that many minutes 4 or 5 times in the first week. In the second week, make it 9 minutes.
Once in awhile, jog for a portion of those minutes, 6 of the 9 minutes for example, take a break, then jog that same amount again. This is called interval training, which is very effective.
Stretching your major leg muscles after you jog is also important.

Slowly...Start out by going slowly and concentrate more on you ability to run rather than jog. I am not a big fan of jogging, but running, yes. Stretch your legs before hand and don't eat anything , breakfast, until you have returned home and showered. Then have breakfast.
Stay away from traffic if you decide to run/jog in the morning. The exhaust from the cars is invisible and can damage your lungs as they expand. Jog on dirt and away from traffic.
And above all, check with your physician before you begin any strenuous exercise program. Let the physician know what your plans are for exercising.
And, of course, have fun.

Given the disorders that you just describe along with your toes and your knees (in certain), you could be higher off utilizing a go teacher. Jogging is infamous for the harm it does to the knees and the bones of the toes (in folks that have flat toes, for instance or a rolling gait) and if you're going into it with joint disorders, you're virtually designated to return a cropper. A go teacher is a high-quality, low influence strategy to paintings your decrease frame. It works each muscle to your legs as good as your glutes (your butt!). The further advantage is for those who get a go teacher with the rush-pull motion, you get a well everywhere exercise (specially of the palms, again and belly muscle tissues). You can get a go teacher for fair cash or become a member of a health club to make use of one. (I frequently use one for forty five mins, four-five instances every week). Believe me, I have noticeable lots of everlasting sporting events comparable accidents that experience occurred to persons who unnoticed the hazards and went forward with a system of pastime that has no longer been compatible for them. Do consider cautiously earlier than taking over strolling for the reason that as soon as the harm is completed, it is vitally problematic to fix.

Start by walking fast, and take short spurts, then as your endurance builds up you will be able to start jogging longer distances. Don't think about getting tired or winded, just get a nice rhythm , in through your nose out through your mouth, and just keep pumping your arms, you'll be running marathon's before you know it, good luck. and get a good pair of running shoes.

First.. put on sweats and tennis shoes, next go outside, then ....lol...no seriously. You have to start by stretching or you will cramp up, and start slowly and not too far, do it a couple of times a week until you get the stride, then you can add mileage and frequency

Make certain your doctor says that you're healthy enough to start an exercise program, purchase a proper pair of shoes (there are stores that specialize in footwear for runners) and start slow.
