How do I fix my PC that has slowed down?

I have a PC running Windows XP. However, it has seen a decline in performance streadily and has now considerably slowed down.

Are there any programs to fix my slow PC? I wouldn't want to format my disk as that would be a tedious process.

I understand your problem - I have had the same troubles in the past and I too didn't want to format the hard-disk. That would have meant resinstalling all programs, fonts and what not. The problem is that most Windows OS have a life span. Experts say that in about 9 months, a fresh install is usually necessary.

Over time, you error files are accumulated that slow down your programs and can even cause crashes. The more you use your computer, the more error files are created. The most frustrating thing is that these error files are created from simple day-to-day computer usage.

Now I use a small software product called PC Speedscan.

It's a small and inexpensive utility I use it to clean up my PC once every two weeks or so. It removes these accumulating error files, fixes all registry errors and does a lot of other cleaning up activity. I now have a PC running for over 12 months and I haven't seen any detoriation in its performance. However, I would suggest using the program regularly - at least once a month. Do try out PC Speedscan and let me know your feedback.

    Hope this helps.

The first thing I would do, is check for spware. Spyware will slow down your PC. Scan your PC with these, both are free and safe to use.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Clean your cache is a good answer. Click tools at the top, then internet options, then under "temporary internet files" click the "delete files" option. And reduce your days to save files to 1-5 days.

All the info given in the first answer is also true, but it was hard for me to follow as well. The first thing to do is clean the cache, then delete unneccesary programs from your control panel, and delete any unneccessary files like music or pictures that you don't use.

after that, defragment. After that, add more ram-you can go to best buy and buy more ram. This will be the most efficient way to solve it.

    Good luck.
